Accessibility
You can play Ec(h)osystem with or without vision. We built this site with the same goal.
We aim for WCAG 2.2 level AA everywhere, and level AAA where we can, for example for contrast.
Keyboard
- Everything works with the keyboard.
- The first link skips to the content.
- A thick yellow outline shows where you are.
- Buttons are at least 44 by 44 pixels.
Moving background
- The background only moves if your system allows motion.
- Pause motion stops it at any time. The settings also have calm and still modes.
- Nothing flashes or flickers. Brightness rises and fades gradually and never reaches full white, because many of our players are sensitive to light.
Snapping
Click or tap an empty spot (not on text), or use one of the Snap buttons. What you get depends on your settings:
- Sound on: you hear the snap, its echo and the creatures nearby, from where they are. The sounds come from the game, and only a few play at once.
- Captions (on by default): every sound appears as text, even with sound off.
- Screen reader: you hear what is near, for example "Humming Buttons to the left, close by".
Sound is off until you turn it on.
Reading
- All text has a contrast of at least 7:1.
- High-contrast mode makes the page black and white and hides the background.
- Body text uses Atkinson Hyperlegible Next. The Braille Institute designed it for readers with low vision.
- You can set text to 200% and widen the spacing between letters, words and lines.
- The page reflows when you zoom.
Other
- The page follows your system settings for reduced motion, higher contrast and forced colours.
- Every image and the video clip has a text description.
- The page works without JavaScript.
- There is no tracking and there are no cookies. Your settings stay on your device.
- The page is also available in German.
Known limits
- Headings use Dongle, the font from the game's menus. Body text never does. If headings are hard to read, try high contrast or larger text.
- We don't control the Steam and itch.io pages we link to.
- So far we have checked the site with the keyboard, on narrow screens, with automated tests (axe-core) and in a first pass with NVDA in Chrome, and fixed what that pass found. Full screen-reader testing (NVDA with Firefox, JAWS, VoiceOver) and Safari are still to do. No outside expert has audited it.
